When we talk of the emergency services we are of course referring to the police, fire and ambulance services. But if you think that being a career in the fore service is all about being busy with a hose or working for the police means walking the beat or driving around all day in a panda car, you’d be wrong. There are a number of different roles available ranging from ambulance technicians and paramedics, coastguards and emergency planners to forensic scientists and photographers, media relations and scenes of crime officers...the list goes on.
However, the most common career paths are that of a firefighter, paramedic and police officer. And it is these three main job roles that we will concentrate on throughout this series.
One of the overriding reasons why people choose a career in the emergency services is the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. Police officers are attracted by the prospect of ridding the streets of crime and the fear of crime. Firefighters can perform the role of hero by rescuing people from fires, accidents and natural disasters. While a paramedic may find themselves holding a person’s life in their hands – a boring desk job these careers are not.
By definition these roles are emergency professions, so you can’t expect to work regular hours. You need to be flexible and prepared to work longer hours as and when required and get used to working in shifts, so don’t always expect to clock-off when your shift ends if you’re in the middle of an emergency.
